Abstract
The result of physical therapy for the 72 cervical disorders are reported in the analysis of clinical symptoms and X-ray findings including strain injury and mild organic bony or disc changes.
The patients are consist of the 54 cervical strain, seven osteoarthritis, six cervical disc degenerations, three subluxations, one each of the rheumatoid arthritis and congenital anomaly. The cervical strain is proved by the loss of normal lordotic curvature of the cervical spine on X-ray examination. The routine daily treatment was 20 minutes of hot pack, three minutes of ultrasound, 0.5-4.0 W/Cm2, and 15 minutes
of cervical traction by 15-25 Lbs. weight for eight weeks. Also they had received the mild analgesic or sedatives for first one week.
1) The sex incidence of male and female was 2:3 and the age distribution was relatevely even from ten ager to 70 years old.
2) Their symptoms are local tenderness (36.2%), limitations of motion (18.5%), radiating pain into upper extremity(16.9%), sensory changes (6.9%), motor weakness, vertigo, dizziness, occipital migrain headache and decreased D.T.R. of the upper extremity.
3) The 54 cervical strain was analized in X-ray examination for its abnormal locations. The hyperextension strain with abnormal curve at C4_5 is twice more than hyperflexion injury of C5-6.
4) The patient responded well to the treatment and 66 out of 72 become symptom free in four weeks. Three cases are needed for eight weeks of treatment to recover and rest of three cases have had Thomas collar or neck braces.
Clinically the subjective symptoms are important and more helpful in evaluation of the patients than objective symptoms such as X-ray finding which is hard to make definite diagnostic criteras. Also the continuation of treatment is valuable to obtain the good result in sufficient explanation of the charactor of disease to them and make them confidence and cooperate fully.
